about

Legend has it that while the Mt Vic Tunnel was being built in the early 1930s, tunnel worker George Coatts murdered his 17 year old girlfriend, Phillis Symonds who was carrying his child, dumping her body in the foundations of the tunnel. Commuters now toot in part to pay tribute to Phillis, and in part to ensure their safety from her ghost that is rumoured to haunt the tunnel. Some say that Phillis committed suicide, including George whose last words were; “I am innocent. I trust in the lord”. However, her body which was found in a hunched position suggests that she tried to climb out of her grave.

lyrics

a new frond unfurling inside you.
Phyllis, you are felt here;
kēhua floating
towards the light
but never making it
before the horns send you
back below ground.
Back Into your bones
found crawling
towards a light that became smaller
and smaller
until for you
the tunnel
had no end.
