about

Named after Kupe’s daughter who he had to leave behind in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Matiu-Somes island was used as a strategic Pa site during pre-European times, being used as battle pa and pa of retreat and is of great significant to mana whenua, Taranaki Whānui. The island was claimed by the crown in 1839 when it was named Somes, and wasn’t returned until the 2000s.

lyrics

E pāpā, kei hea koe?
I slashed my breasts
until the rocks were red for you.
You name an island for me.
Isn’t this what all fathers do?
Put their children out to sea,
watch them grow roots into the expanse,
and claim our new spaces for themselves.
Then leave us
to bleed our red soil
into the waters
they use
to leave us
behind.
