about

Matiu-Somes has a complex and dark history during times of war and hardship for both Māori and Pakeha. The island was used as a quarantine station for both people and animals, with people suspected of infection being made to sit in a smoke house where they were treated with chlorine, potassium nitrate and sulphur fumes. Prisoners were also held on the island during world war one and two, mostly German nationals as well as Italian and Japanese Nationals. This track is recorded in one of the gun emplacements that were mounted in 1942.

lyrics

I’m sorry,
but this land is a waiting room.
The stagnating wairua
evaporating to slow mists
in trapped houses
filled with chlorine.
Sulphur clouds
In the air.
This is a rugged purgatory
for what you did,
for what you didn't do.
See the places where the guns sit;
concrete, cold,
empty
and waiting
for a war
that never
arrives.
